First of all, I think everyone should Google John Abraham right now. He is a Bollywood actor and he is the greatest Indian actor, he is great looking as well. The other day we all went to see Aaja Nachle at the Cinema and it was another great film, if you love dance and song, which I do. At the end of the film two of the main stars fall in love and the man professes that he could never live with out his girl. A man from the audience yells really loud in Hindi, "Man, this is the problem with love," We all started laughing. The other day I arrived at school and Harold stated to me very firmly that I was no longer aloud to speak English at school. He stated that I spent money on my Hindi lessons and I now should only speak Hindi to him. Our Rickshaw driver over heard this conversation and now only speaks Hindi to me. Lovely. I have been speaking basic Hindi with the children and they decided that since I knew a few words in Hindi it was time to try out Rajisthani on me (their native tongue). They all started laughing, and I started laughing as well. We have such great fun. The children are truly amazing. The more time I spend there, the more I fall in love with the school and everyone at the school. The people in the slum were able to get money from the city to pave the small dirt road going through the slum (barely wide enough to drive a motorcycle through). They finished sometime this weekend and the slum looks like a different place. First of all, it is a hundred times more sanitary and it makes the place look so different. It is also nice that I don't have to jump over puddles or look down the whole time to avoid walking through cow, goat, dog, and human crap. I was so amazed on how much better the place looked, and it is so much better and healthier for the children. Someone very recently asked me if I was married or alone. I replied that I was single. This is the way that most people here view "my situation." Most people can not believe that I am 25 and not married. I laugh if off most of the time. Harold is determined to get the children to learn the words to Jingle Bells before Christmas and it is quite hilarious to watch. He is quite militant about the whole situation. I think the children remember the words to the song solely out of fear of Harold. Today, one of the adolescent girls (14 yrs old) told myself and Nadia everything we needed to do in order to be beautiful. Here is the list she gave us. 1) wear bindi's (dot on forehead in between our eyebrows), 2)we both need to put on lip stick, 3)wear earings, 4) we both need to comb our hair better, 5)wear sari's (we compromised with salwar suits) 6) nose ring (this means we need to pierce our noses) 7)toe rings (she said that we can't wear these because we are not married) 8)She said my toes were beautiful but I need to paint and file my finger nails. Basically we both need a complete makeover. Pooja is so funny, she always makes me laugh and tells me exactly how it is. No bullshi*t with this girl, or anyone in India for that matter. This is why I love India. According to everyone who lives here, Anything is possible in India. I am starting to find the truth in this statement. This is a country where anything goes. A person could go mad trying to make sense of all the madness. It is not worth one's time or engery, I think the better method is just to go with the flow and laugh it all off. Today Shamila (another volunteer) and I were trying to get a rickshaw home from the market, and we were trying to bargian for the right price. Shamila argued for 5 minutes in Hindi with five rickshaw dirvers and we were laughing so hard because we were arguing over 10 rupees which is about 25 cents. We finally gave in, but it was good fun haggling with the all the drivers.
